Details
Traumatic SGLI is automatic coverage layered on top of SGLI for service members who suffer specific traumatic injuries, burns covering 20%+ of body, blindness, amputation, hospitalization 15+ consecutive days, paralysis. Payouts $25,000-$100,000 depending on the injury schedule, paid tax-free directly to the service member (not heirs).
Restrictions
Covers ALL injuries, not just combat. A snowboarding accident, car crash, training-injury fall, all eligible if the injury meets the schedule. File via DD Form 2911. Time-sensitive: claim within 2 years of the injury. Most service members never file even when eligible because no one tells them TSGLI exists separate from regular SGLI death benefit. The injury schedule is published at va.gov/life-in
