Veterans and active-duty service members who work full-time for a qualifying public service employer, including any federal, state, local, or tribal government agency such as the VA, U.S. military, or public schools, can have the remaining balance on their federal Direct Loans forgiven after making 120 qualifying monthly payments under an income-driven repayment plan. Months spent on active duty count toward the 120 payments even if loans were in deferment or forbearance during that time. There is no income cap to qualify, and the forgiven amount is tax-free.

Restrictions

Only Federal Direct Loans are eligible, Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) and Perkins Loans must be consolidated into a Direct Consolidation Loan first. The Department of Education automatically matches federal employment records to credit qualifying months, reducing manual paperwork for veterans employed by the federal government.
