CHAMPVA (Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs) provides health care coverage to spouses, dependent children, and survivors of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected condition, or who died in the line of duty or from a service-connected disability. It covers most medically necessary services including inpatient and outpatient care, mental health care, prescription drugs, and skilled nursing facility care, with CHAMPVA sharing costs at 75% after a deductible.
Restrictions
CHAMPVA beneficiaries who are eligible for Medicare must be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B before CHAMPVA will pay. Spouses or children of veterans who are eligible for TRICARE (e.g., active-duty or retiree families) are NOT eligible for CHAMPVA, they are separate programs.
