Details

South Dakota gives veterans a priority hiring advantage for all state, county, city, and school district jobs. Any qualifying veteran who meets the minimum qualifications for a position is automatically added to the interview list. Disabled veterans receive preference over non-disabled veterans. The unremarried surviving spouse of a deceased veteran can also use the preference.

Restrictions

Preference order: disabled veteran → spouse of disabled veteran → veteran → unremarried surviving spouse. Age and unrelated physical impairment cannot be used to disqualify an otherwise eligible candidate. Applies to appointment, employment, and promotion at all levels of state, county, and local government.
