When veterans apply for competitive state government jobs in Rhode Island, they receive a 5-point credit added to their civil service entrance exam score after achieving a passing score. Veterans with a service-connected disability receive a 10-point credit. National Guard or Reserve retirees with 20 or more years of service also qualify.

Restrictions

Statute: RI General Law 36-4-19. Must achieve a passing score before the preference is applied. Disabled veteran applicants must be war veterans (campaign ribbon or expeditionary medal) with a VA service-connected rating.
