Massachusetts state employees can "buy back" up to four years of active military service and count it toward their state pension. You pay a lump sum, and those years count the same as if you had been a state employee during that time. The HERO Act (2024) expanded the enrollment window to 10 years after starting state service, with a one-year grace period for those who missed it.
Restrictions
Only available to employees of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Example: 6 years of active duty + 6 years of state service = eligible to vest after 6 state years instead of 10. HERO Act grace period allows late enrollment for employees who missed the window.
