New Jersey veterans who served during a qualifying war era and were honorably discharged receive absolute preference when applying for state civil service jobs, they are automatically placed at the top of open competitive employment lists regardless of their exam score. Disabled veterans (with at least 10% VA disability rating) receive the highest tier of preference, placed above all other veterans and non-veterans.

Restrictions

Surviving spouses of veterans who died outside of service (and haven't remarried) also receive preference. Spouses of disabled veterans may also claim preference under specific conditions. Requires DD-214 and completed Civil Service Veterans Preference Claim Form.
