South Dakota veterans who served on active duty in a combat zone or during certain conflict periods, and who have used up all federal education benefits, can attend any state-supported university or technical college tuition-free for undergraduate courses. Veterans earn one month of free tuition for each month of qualifying service, with a minimum of one month and a maximum of four academic years.
Restrictions
Must be a current South Dakota resident who qualifies for in-state tuition, and must have no remaining federal education benefit eligibility (GI Bill or similar). Qualifying service includes: active duty Aug 2, 1990 onward, receipt of an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal or combat service medal, or a service-connected disability.
