Illinois employers can earn a state income tax credit of up to $5,000 annually for hiring qualifying unemployed veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom (20% of wages paid, up to $5,000). Hiring veterans of Operation Desert Storm, OEF, or OIF at the standard rate qualifies for up to $1,200 (10% of wages). This makes veteran job seekers more attractive to employers.
