Disabled American Veterans operates a national fleet of free transportation vans to ferry veterans (any rating, even unrated) to VA medical appointments. Volunteer drivers, many of them vets themselves, handle pickup at home or pre-designated meeting points and return after the appointment. No cost to the veteran.
Restrictions
Call your local DAV chapter or 833-DAV-RIDE to schedule. 24-72 hour advance notice typical. Particularly valuable for vets in rural areas where the closest VA is 30+ miles, vets who don't drive, or vets with medical restrictions (post-surgery, after sedation). DAV also runs free professional claims-help (separate program), National Service Officers help file initial and appealed claims at zero cos
