Civil Service Hiring Preference
Civil Service Hiring Preference: Veteran Priority on State and Municipal Jobs
Veterans who pass a Massachusetts civil service exam are placed at the top of the eligibility list ahead of all non-veterans, regardless of score.
Details
Veterans who pass a Massachusetts civil service exam are placed at the top of the eligibility list ahead of all non-veterans, regardless of score. Disabled veterans are placed ahead of non-disabled veterans. Veterans also receive a 2-point bonus added to their score on promotional exams. For labor service positions (no exam required), veterans jump to the front of the list.
Restrictions
Governed by M.G.L. ch. 31, s.26. Surviving spouses and single parents of veterans killed in action or who died from a service-connected wartime disability also receive preference. Preference is for original appointments, not promotions (except the 2-point bonus).
