Details

Veterans who are totally and permanently disabled, and Alabama residents who are 65 or older, are exempt from property taxes on their home and up to 160 acres of adjacent land. Separately, any home acquired through a federal VA specially adapted housing grant is fully exempt from property taxes for as long as the veteran or their unremarried spouse owns and lives in it.

Restrictions

Totally disabled veterans must apply for the homestead exemption at their county tax assessor's office. As of 2026 legislation, totally disabled veterans no longer have to re-verify the exemption annually (HB155 signed April 2026).
