Details

The surviving spouse of a uniformed service member killed in the line of duty receives a full property tax exemption on their home, meaning zero property taxes, for as long as they remain in the home and do not remarry or cohabitate with an unrelated person. This is separate from (and more generous than) the disabled veteran homestead exemption.

Restrictions

"Uniformed services" includes all branches plus National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Public Health Service. Apply to county auditor with DD-1300 Report of Casualty or equivalent federal documentation. Exemption ends on death, remarriage, or cohabitation with unrelated person.
