South Dakota will pay up to $100 toward burial and funeral expenses for an honorably discharged veteran, or the spouse, widow, or widower of a veteran, when the estate or immediate family lacks funds to cover the costs. The veteran must have been a South Dakota resident for at least one year before entering military service or before death.

The state also pays $200 toward the cost of setting a government-furnished headstone or marker at the grave of a veteran who was a South Dakota resident for one year before entering service or one year before death. Contact SD DVA or county veterans service officer to apply.
