Details
Ohio law requires county sheriffs to waive the concealed handgun license (CHL) fee for applicants who are active-duty or reserve members of the U.S. Armed Forces, or who have retired from or been honorably discharged from military service. The standard fee is $67. The waiver is available for both new licenses and renewals. There is a statewide cap of $1.5 million in waived fees per calendar year, once that cap is hit, sheriffs stop waiving fees until January 1 of the next year.
Restrictions
Apply early in the calendar year, the $1.5M annual cap means late applicants may not receive the waiver. Military training documentation (DD-214 showing firearms training) satisfies the competency requirement in place of a civilian training course. Applicants still must meet all other CHL requirements.
