Starting January 1, 2023, Rhode Island fully exempts military retirement pay from state personal income tax. There is no income cap, no age requirement, and no dollar limit, the full amount of taxable military pension income can be subtracted from Rhode Island adjusted gross income when filing state taxes.
Restrictions
Statute: R.I. Gen. Laws § 44-30-12(c)(11). Cannot double-count this income toward the separate $50,000 general pension/annuity modification available for Tax Year 2025.
