Georgia veterans who retired from the military pay less in state income taxes on their military retirement pay. Veterans under 62 can exclude up to $17,500 (with an additional $17,500 if they have $17,500+ of earned income); ages 62-64 exclude up to $35,000; age 65 and older exclude up to $65,000. Starting in the 2026 tax year, HB 266 expands the under-65 exemption to $65,000.

Restrictions

HB 266 signed May 13, 2025 by Governor Kemp expands the exemption to $65,000 for those under 65 starting tax year 2026. Married couples may both claim if both receive military retirement pay.
