New York State automatically extends the validity of an active-duty service member's driver's license throughout their military service and for up to 6 months after discharge. Discharged or separated service members can renew an expired license up to 2 years after the extended expiration (no more than 30 months total since discharge).

Restrictions

Vehicle registrations are also automatically extended for up to 60 days from return to NY. DMV has a dedicated Veterans' Liaison reachable at dmv.vetliaison@dmv.ny.gov.
