Massachusetts veterans with service-connected disabilities, Purple Heart recipients, prisoners of war, and Medal of Honor recipients can receive annual property tax exemptions ranging from $400 to a full exemption, depending on the level of disability or award. Municipalities may choose to double these amounts or index them to inflation under the HERO Act. Surviving spouses of qualifying veterans also qualify.

Restrictions

Governed by M.G.L. ch. 59, s.5 (Clauses 22-22H). Must be the veteran's primary residence (domicile) as of July 1. Must have lived in Massachusetts for at least 6 months before military service OR 5 consecutive years before filing. Apply at your local board of assessors by April 1 each year.
