Surviving spouses, parents, grandparents, siblings, and children of service members who died while serving on active duty during a time of military conflict can get North Dakota Gold Star license plates at no additional charge beyond normal vehicle registration fees. The plates can also be personalized (up to 5 characters) at no extra cost.

Restrictions

Authorized under NDCC 39-04-10.14. Eligible family members include surviving spouse, parents (including step/adoptive/foster), grandparents, siblings (including half-siblings), and children (including step/adoptive). The ND DVA certifies eligibility and signs the application, then the applicant takes the approved form to the DOT. Once eligibility is granted, it cannot be revoked.
