California completely removes property tax on the primary home of a veteran who is 100% service-connected disabled (or unemployable rated at 100%). The basic exemption reduces assessed value by roughly $169,000 and the low-income version reduces it by roughly $254,000, both adjusted each year for inflation. The unmarried surviving spouse of a qualifying veteran can also claim this exemption.
Restrictions
Apply using form BOE-261-G from your county assessor. Basic exemption requires one-time filing; low-income version requires annual renewal. Statute: California Constitution Article XIII §4(a) and Revenue and Taxation Code §205.5.
