Apple verifies via UNiDAYS (students) or ID.me (military/vet). Stack with carrier bundle deals when buying iPhone via Verizon Military Plan / T-Mobile Military Plan — the carrier discounts apply on monthly device installments separately from Apple's hardware discount. Apple's Refurbished store gives an additional 10-15% off — and military discount still applies on top.
